What is limescale? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Limescale is nothing more than a mixture of water-insoluble calcium and magnesium carbonates, to which iron compounds are often attached, turning the off-white\/white color of limescale into a reddish-brown.<\/p>\n

We have all had the experience of sipping tea or coffee after using a kettle or coffee maker and noticing bits of scale floating on the surface of the drink, which have come off from the inside of an improperly maintained device, and we have certainly wondered how harmful this can be to the human body. Fortunately, scale does not have any harmful effects on health, as it is broken down by stomach acid when it enters the stomach and is thus eliminated from our body.<\/p>\n

How can we get rid of it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first thing to keep in mind when it comes to effective descaling is that the commercials you see and hear on television greatly exaggerate the problems caused by hard water, encouraging consumers to choose expensive, unfriendly solutions to remove scale. These solutions often prove useful and effective, but there are other alternatives that, in addition to being just as effective, are much cheaper and greener than their counterparts containing strong acids such as phosphoric acid.<\/p>\n

In most cases, the carbonates that form scale can be effectively dissolved with very weak organic acids. For example, citric acid is highly recommended for descaling coffee makers, as it is a cheap, quick and environmentally friendly solution.<\/p>\n

Another natural miracle cure that many housewives swear by is vinegar, despite its particularly unpleasant smell. Vinegar can be used to make an excellent scrubbing agent that can also easily deal with limescale: mix 3 dl of 10% vinegar with the same amount of water, then add a pinch of salt. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle, from which you can easily dispense, or spray it directly onto the surface you want to treat! You can use it in the bathroom, in the kitchen, success is guaranteed!<\/p>\n

Like vinegar, lemon and grapefruit can work wonders when it comes to natural descaling.<\/p>\n

If you like to experiment, you can also try cola, as its high acid content mercilessly eats away limescale and any unwanted dirt\/deposits, but it is worth knowing that cola has a very high sugar content, which leaves a sticky layer on surfaces, which must then be rinsed off. Its sugar-free version does not cause such a problem.<\/p>\n
