It can be said with confidence about limescale, that makes every housewife's life miserable, since besides, that it does not look aesthetically pleasing, even dangerous, because limescale, which is clearly visible to the naked eye, is not only our household items, installed on the surface of our devices, but also in the drain pipe, which is unsolicited for clogging leads, if not properly maintained.
What is limescale?
Limestone is no different, like water-insoluble calcium- and a mixture of magnesium carbonates, to which iron compounds are often attached, thereby coloring the dirty white/white color of the scale to a reddish brown.
Soft or hard water?
Water hardness is a measurable data. The variable and constant hardness together determine the total hardness. When talking about water hardness, all hardnesses are specified, for which we use the German hardness scale.
The hardness of Hungary's tap water shows a very varied picture, since the waters are softer in the east, until then, the water in the western counties is particularly hard. The hardest water is mostly encountered by people living in the capital, frequent water descaling is strongly recommended for the residents there.
It is dangerous for the human body?
It has happened to all of us, that kettle, or tea after using a coffee machine, or while sipping coffee, we noticed pieces of limescale floating on the surface of the drink, which detaches from the inside of an improperly maintained device, and it must have crossed everyone's mind, how harmful it can be to the human body. Fortunately, limescale does not have any health-damaging effects, because when it gets into the stomach, the stomach acid eats it away, this is how it leaves our body.
How to get rid of it?
The first thing about effective descaling, which is worth keeping in mind, hogy a televízióban látható és hallható reklámok nagyban eltúlozzák a kemény víz okozta problémákat, thus encouraging consumers to do so, that the expensive, choose a non-environmentally friendly solution to remove limescale. These solutions often prove to be useful and effective, however, there are other alternatives, which in addition, that they are equally effective, they are much cheaper and greener, like strong acids, e.g. their counterparts containing phosphoric acid.
In most cases, the carbonates that make up limescale can also be effectively dissolved with very weak organic acids, for example, citric acid is highly recommended for descaling the coffee machine, which is a cheap, quick and environmentally friendly solution.
Another natural miracle cure, which many housewives swear by vinegar, despite, that the smell is particularly unpleasant. Vinegar can be used to make an excellent scrub, which easily treats limescale as well: mix it up 3 dl 10% vinegar with the same amount of water, then add a pinch of salt. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle, from which you can easily dose, or you can blow directly on the surface you want to treat! You can use it in the bathroom, in the kitchen, success is guaranteed!
Like vinegar, lemon and grapefruit can work wonders, when it comes to natural descaling.
If you like to experiment, you can also try cola, because thanks to its high acid content, it mercilessly eats up limescale, and any unwanted dirt/deposit, however, it is worth knowing, that cola has a very high sugar content, which leaves a sticky layer on surfaces, amit aztán mindenképpen le kell öblíteni. Its sugar-free version does not cause such a problem.
