The friendly help that cost more than a professional drain cleaner

Many of us have experienced a sudden household problem – such as a clogged toilet – completely ruined our day. In such cases, we look for a quick solution, and often the first thought is „we’ll fix it ourselves” or „let’s call my buddy who knows how to do this.” There are plenty of videos and articles on the internet about „home drain cleaning,” so it’s easy to feel like we can handle the problem on our own.

But what happens when a well-intentioned friend's help costs more than a professional's fee? Now I'll tell you an instructive story that's exactly what it's all about.

The story – this is how the „rescue operation” began”

On a typical Saturday morning, our main character, Peter, and his wife noticed that the toilet wasn't flushing properly. At first, it only drained slowly, then it stopped completely. They immediately thought: "Let's call Zoli, he knows everything!"„

Zoli, the good friend, was an enthusiastic DIYer who often installed faucets, repaired locks, and, according to him, had even seen a few clogs. Moreover, he didn't help out for money, but out of friendship.

Before he left, he quickly searched YouTube for „toilet clogs at home.” He found a video where they „solved” the problem in minutes with a rubber hose and a bucket of water.

The first attempt – when they didn't yet suspect trouble

Zoli immediately got to work upon arriving at the scene. Pumping and rinsing with hot water didn't help, so he took out his homemade "tube camera" - which was actually a phone attached to the end of a long cable, wrapped in foil.

However, the device not only did not help, but it also got stuck in the pipe. Peter and Zoli tried to pull it out for an hour, but the cable kept slipping deeper and deeper. By then, the wife was also starting to worry because the water was standing on the bathroom floor and the smell was not pleasant.

The situation escalated – when it was the wall’s turn

Since the cable didn't come out, Zoli decided that the easiest way would be to break open the pipe behind the wall. He thought that a small hole would be enough for cleaning and then "wall it back up.".

However, the demolition turned out to be much bigger than planned. After dismantling the wall, it turned out that not only was the cable stuck, but also an old, half-rotten towel stuck in the pipe - it had probably been there years ago.

At that point, it became clear: the situation was beyond the capabilities of home methods.

The professional intervention

Finally, Peter and I called a professional. drain cleaner. The specialist is specialized with a tube camera and using a high-pressure cleaner, he cleared the blockage within half an hour, removed the jammed cable, and gave advice on future prevention.

However, the cost of restoring the wall, replacing the cladding, and unnecessary tools totaled three times what the professional's fee would have cost if they had been called in immediately.

Lesson learned – where is the line between trying at home and specialist among the challenges?

The story highlights that while some minor blockages can be resolved at home, there is a point where further attempts at home can do more harm than good.

General guidelines:

  • If simple pumping, flushing with hot water, and drain cleaner don't help, don't force it any further.

  • Never use homemade tools that could get stuck in the pipe.

  • If the blockage is in the wall or under the floor, it requires special tools and expertise.

  • The sooner we call a specialist, the cheaper and faster the solution can be.

Closing remarks

Well-intentioned help from friends is a nice thing, but it is not helpful in every situation. A professional anti-clogging not only does he have the right tools, but he also has the experience to find the real cause of the problem – quickly, without causing damage. Sometimes the best way to save money is to contact a professional right away.
